2023: EKET CHAIRMAN SUES FOR POLITICAL TOLERANCE
…as Political Actors Sign Peace Pact
As the 2023 elections gather momentum, the Council Chairman of Eket Local Government, Mr Akaniyene Tommey has called on political stakeholders and supporters to imbibe the spirit of tolerance and peace through out the period.
The plea was made by the Council Boss during the signing of a Peace Accord by the political parties in the local government at the Eket Divisional Headquarters along Eket Oron Road.
Akaniyene Tommey was of the opinion that politics should unite Eket as a people rather than being a divisive tool hence the political actors should always absorb and tolerate opposing views during the season.
The Peace Accord which was at the instant of the DPO of Eket Division, CSP Sunday Digha was well attended by stakeholders of the major political parties in the Local Government.
Setting the tone for the gathering, CSP Sunday Digha noted that the peace pact was necessary in order to ensure a safe environment for all political parties and their activities during and after the political season in the Local Government.
The Chairman of Eket Local Government whose presence at the meeting was at the instant of being the Chief Security Officer of the local government, frowned at reports that he is using his powers to frustrate political parties in using billboards rather he disclosed that whoever wants to use billboards regardless of the political party must follow due process and also get approval from the Local Government Council.
Speaking at the gathering, the Eket Chapter Chairman of the PDP, Abongiwaad Emman Mbong described the Peace Accord as timely and necessary especially as the elections gather momentum.
He frowned at social media users who churn out provocative contents capable of heating up the political space calling on them do desist from such acts. The Chapter Chairman further stated that he is an advocate for peace and tolerance in politics and he will always give a nod of approval for actions aimed at fostering peaceful coexistence in the Local Government.
Also present at the Peace Accord signing were the Eket Chapter Chairman of the APC, Mr Ubong Okposin, the Chapter Chairman of YPP, Comrade Gospel Edoho and other political party stakeholders in the Local Government.
