Gov Emmanuel’s silence on illegal demolition of FoodAffairs building a display of bad governance traits

Everyone needs to rise and add a voice to condemn bad governments. The various sectors and interests have to realize that bad governance affects the development and happiness of the citizens of any nation. It truncates the hope and happiness of the common citizens and jeopardizes the trust in a united people.

Bad governance is a product of a bad government. A bad government cannot provide social justice and sustains the good living standard of its ordinary citizens. In Africa and drawing down to my country Nigeria, Akwa Ibom State, there is a huge crisis of development crises resulting from bad governance.

A bad government is an institution that betrays the trust and expectations of the common citizens. A bad government forgets the citizens that brought it to power and focus on its selfish interests. It is mindless to the detriment of the overall well-being of the general masses which it claims to represent. Bad governance equals ruins

Bad governance is caused and sustained by a negligent attitude of people. First, when those entrusted with the task of governance fail in that responsibility and when the people who are feeling the bite of maladministration feel at ease about it without questioning their impunity.

“Injustice and lawlessness is the greatest terror a government can ever enforce on its people” – Mehmet Murat Ildan

It is absurd and baffling to realize that Governor Udom Emmanuel, who took an oath to protect lives and properties in Akwa Ibom State could be this cold and insensitive to the pains of Mr. Isidore Ebong, the CEO of Food Affairs Eateries, whose property along the popular Uyo-Ikot Ekpene Road was on the 27th of June, 2019 demolished on the orders of the State Government according to Mr. Ephraim Inyang-eyen who perpetrated this act of wickedness whereas no Kobo has been paid as compensation.

A lot has been written and said about this episode, being the unlawful demolition of the said property, which was to pave way for the already-completed Uyo-Ikot Ekpene dual carriageway, a project initiated by the Chief Godswill Akpabio administration and lately completed by the present administration of Mr. Udom Emmanuel.

“The root cause of poverty is social injustice and the government that abets it” – Colin Powell

In most African countries, the root cause of their acidic poverty is social injustice which is enhanced by the government executing bad governance. Lack of industrialization, poorly executed public infrastructure, sub-standard education, corruption and impunity, poverty and hunger, lies and deception, endless promises, and slow or none implementation are very visible issues that litter the social and economic space of most African countries.

It has become very difficult for the pronouncements and policies of the government in this region to be trusted and it may not be surprised when those policies are not implemented. Bad governance equals ruins

The crux of the matter now is that Mr. Isidore Ebong’s source of livelihood with scores of employees was cruelly taken out for about three years now and the management was left with the burden of settling huge loans obtained from the bank for the business, while the staffs have suddenly been thrown into the labor market following the unfortunate incident.

Thurgood Marshall was right in his postulation when he said “Where you see wrong or inequality or injustice, speak out because this is your country”.
Isidore Ebong’s ordeal is not the only instance where Governor Udom Emmanuel has exhibited his insensitivity to the plights of the citizenry. The Governor’s refusal to pay the backlog of gratuity among other entitlements to retired Civil Servants and Next of Kin respectively, Children of those who died in active service is a testament to the Governor’s attitude in responding to burning issues troubling its citizens.

There have been speculations that Mr. Isidore Ebong is currently undergoing his ordeals because he was perceived to be a member of an opposition party, the APC to be specific, a claim which the Food Affairs M.D have severally debunked to be false. He also debunked claims by the former Works Commissioner, Mr. Ephraim Inyangeyen nor his agents, that he was ever paid compensation for the eatery before demolition.

What good will it do to the State Government to see the Food Affairs M.D suffer for the unsettled loans he obtained for months now? For how long will it take the present administration to harken to the cries of Mr. Ebong before considering the need to pay him compensation for the huge losses he might have incurred as a result of the sudden demolition of the said property with goods and valuables worth millions of Naira?

Perhaps the time is now, for the concerned citizens of our dear State to speak out in unison to the powers that be, that Mr. Isidore Ebong is properly compensated, if not for anything, but for the maturity and patience, he has so far exhibited, rather than resort to the Court, an option which is currently not open for consideration by the owners of the eatery.

.” One generation came and left all things for God to do, another came and fought tyranny, humiliation, brutality, poverty, corruption, and bad governance through determination and God’s help” – Bamigboye Olurotimi

The place of prayer seeking divine assistance to help build and sustain the prosperity and orderliness of a nation or country is commendable. When such prayers are made and no conscious action is taken amid prevailing social injustice and negligence, it will equal national catastrophe. The people will have to decide whether they have to be motivated to chase out bad governance or continue to spiritualize it as it is done in Nigeria most times.

Setting up an inquiry into this matter to resolve the same will not only give credence to the Governor’s “Only God” mantra but redeem his image as a listening Governor. The time to act fast on this matter is now.

A stitch in time, they say saves nine.
